What does it mean to be (gender) Equality Agnostic?

Gender Equality Agnosticism is a form of Egalitarianism, specifically limited to gender equality. In brief, it is the belief that equality is not a men’s issue, or a women’s issue—it is a human rights issue and therefore needs to be pursued from a standpoint that takes on the position of both sexes.

Equality is defined as: The state or quality of being equal; correspondence in quantity, degree, value, rank, or ability.

Agnostic is defined as: A person who holds neither of two opposing positions on a topic. Socrates was an agnostic on the subject of immortality.

What are the principles of being (Gender) Equality Agnostic?

  • You believe that all people regardless of gender have a right to equal treatment and opportunity.
  • You believe that gender equality issues are not one-sided, and that both men and women have equality needs that must be addressed.
  • You agree with some but not all of the notions, and or issues, raised by Feminism and or the Men’s Rights Movement (MRM).
  • You believe that by limiting equality debate, or by taking male or female ‘sides’ that equality issues become unbalanced and divisive, instead of something we can work towards together.

What are the two opposing positions on the topic of gender equality?

In simple terms the positions could be defined as follows.

Feminism: A female gender equality ideology that believes all men and women should be equal, have the same rights and treatments regardless of sex, AND that women have historically been (and still are) oppressed by patriarchy and must be empowered in order to be equal.

Men’s Rights Movement (MRM): A male gender equality ideology that believes all men and women should be equal, have the same rights and treatments regardless of sex, AND that men have historically been disposable (and still are), that men and women have both served societal gender roles that were disempowering to both men and women in different ways.

    Summary

If you’re Equality Agnostic you believe in gender equality, you feel that both sides have points, but you do not agree with everything either side says, similar to holding the middle ground between Creationism and Evolution idealogies.

If each concept were boiled down to a value statement, it could arguably be presented as this

    Feminism—Women can do anything!
    MRM—Men can do anything!
Equality Agnostic—Together, we can do anything!
